NEWARK, NJ--Stony Brook scored a goal in each half on its way to a 2-1 road victory at NJIT Wednesday evening in America East Conference action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
With the win, Stony Brook picks up its second straight win of the season, improving to 7-4-0, 3-2-0 in the America East while the Highlanders move to 3-8-1 overall, 1-4-0 in the America East.
NJIT held a slight edge in overall shots 10-to-8 led by Regsan Watkins with four shots and three from Alejandro Rabell.
Stony Brook went ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute on a cross from Trausti Birgisson to a running Iker Alvarado in the center of the penalty area, chipping a left-footed shot into the upper right hand corner of the net past a diving Highlander keeper.
After the first 45 minutes, both teams were even with four shots each. Watkins led all players with a pair of shots.
Watkins evened the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute on a right-footed shot from the top of the penalty area, assisted by Rene White. Watkins picked up his 39th career goal and moved into second among NCAA Division I leaders while White tallied his 102nd career point which tops all NCAA Division I leaders in points.
Stony Brook regained the lead 2-1 in the 69th minute as Aki Solvason slipped the ball between two Highlander defenders to Jonas Bickus who put away his fourth goal of the season.
In the 72nd minute, NJIT's Zach Halma served a cross into the middle of the box, finding Watkins who chipped the ball but Stony Brook's Edmond Kaiser tip-saved the shot.
NJIT keeper Samuel Reisgys combined for four saves.
NJIT will wrap up non-conference action with a pair of road games at Hofstra on October 16 and at Drexel on October 19. Both times are set for 5pm kickoffs.
