NEWARK, NJ--The NJIT men's soccer team moved back into the win column with a 2-1 victory over visiting Loyola Maryland Tuesday evening in men's soccer non-conference at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
With the win, NJIT snaps a three-game skid moving to 3-6-1 overall while Loyola Maryland, who was selected preseason favorite in the Patriot League, dropped to 4-4-2 overall.
The Highlanders are 3-0 on the season when allowing opponents to score just one goal (4-1 win vs. FDU; 2-1 win in overtime vs. UMass Lowell and 2-1 vs. Loyola).
Graduate student Tomas Jorge scored his second goal of the season, putting the Highlanders on top in the 26th minute.
Fifth-year senior Rene White scored NJIT's second goal of the game in the 62nd minute, recording his eighth goal of the season. For his career, White tallied his 46th career goal and 101th career point. His 46 career goals tops Division I active career leaders while his 101 career points ranks tied for first with SMU's Gabriel Costa.
The home team held a huge advantage in total shots 15-to-6 led by four shots from Jose Escandon, three from White and two each from Jorge and Aguirre-Rosas.
Junior goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys picked up the win, stopping three Greyhound shots.
NJIT took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute on a long range blast about 25 yards by Tomas Jorge into the upper 90 assisted by White and Luc Smith. Jorge tallied his second goal of the season while Smith was credited with his first point of the season.
At the half, NJIT led 7-4 in overall shots, paced by Tomas Jorge and Rene White with two shots each.
Two minutes into the second half, Regsan Watkins' blast just sailed high over the frame after a perfectly placed pass from Rene White.
NJIT went up 2-0 in the 62nd minute on a goal by captain Rene White assisted by Regsan Watkins and Justin Aguirre-Rosas. Watkins carried the ball down the near side, crossing the ball into the middle of the box, finding Aguirre-Rosas who slipped the ball between two Greyhound defenders to NJIT's White who put away his eighth goal of the season.
Loyola added a late goal in the 86th minute on a goal by Loc San, his second of the season assisted by Justin Ingram, as San slipped the ball past a kneeling Highlander keeper.
NJIT will return to America East Conference action, hosting Vermont on Homecoming Weekend, on Saturday, October 9 at 3pm.
