NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The NJIT women's volleyball team traveled to take on Iona in a non-conference match on Tuesday and came from behind to defeat the Gaels in five sets.
NJIT, which attacked at a season-high .329 clip in the match, battled back from a 20-15 first set deficit to take the frame 26-24. Iona took the next two sets 25-17 and 25-21, before the Highlanders forced the winner-take-all fifth set with a 25-16 victory while attacking at a .556 percentage in the fourth set.
The Highlanders were once again efficient in the fifth set, hitting .438 en route to the 15-8 match-clinching victory.
Four different Highlanders recorded double-digit kills in the victory, led by
Courtney Branch's 15.
Ines Varela (13),
Adriana Goetz-Morales (13), and
Elley Torres (10) each tallied 10 or more kills in the win.
Branch also put together a great defensive display with nine blocks (two solo). Both of the junior's kills and blocks totals were career-highs.
Juliana Impaglia handled the setting duties for NJIT and dished out a career-best 55 assists in the victory.
NJIT returns to America East action this weekend with a pair of road matches. The Highlanders will travel to Albany on Friday for a 7pm match, before taking on Binghamton on Sunday at 1pm.
