Hofstra Blanks Highlanders


HEMPSTEAD, NY--Hofstra's Ryan Carmichael tallied a pair of goals in The Pride's 4-0 shutout victory over visiting NJIT Saturday evening in non-conference men's soccer action at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Hofstra, owners of a 11-1-1 record and an nine-game undefeated streak (8-0-1) is the top team receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. In the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 Poll, the Pride came in at No. 22 and moved up a spot from last week and in the CollegeSoccerNews Top 30 Poll, Hofstra is the top team in the receiving votes category.

NJIT, which played down a man after a red card was issued to NJIT's starting goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys in the third minute, moved to 3-9-1 overall.

The Pride held a 16-to-2 advantage in overall shots led by Carmichael with six shots and 6-to-0 in corner kicks.  NJIT's Alejandro Rabell and Paul Kondratowicz each recorded one shot each.

Hofstra got on the board early in the seventh minute on a goal by sophomore Ryan Carmichael assisted by Hendrik Hebbeker for a 1-0 lead.  Hebbeker slid past the NJIT defender gaining position inside the box, crossing a pass over the Highlander defense to Carmichael who headed home his 11th goal of the season for the Pride.  Carmichael currently ranks third in the nation in total goals.

The Pride went ahead 2-0 on the second goal of the match by Carmichael, increasing his season goal total to 12 in the 19th minute.  Hofstra's Storm Strongin and Stefan Mason were credited with the double assist on the header by Carmichael, who put away to the right of the Highlander keeper Caden Pellito

Hofstra increased its lead to 3-0 in the 41st minute on a goal by Roc Charles assisted by Hebbeker.  Charles put away a left-footed shot up the middle of the diving Highlander keeper. 

The Pride collected its fourth goal of the match in the 51st minute on a tally by Strongin assisted by Pierce Infuso.

NJIT in a stretch of the last four-out-of-five matches on the road will visit Drexel on October 19 at 5pm.
