PHILADELPHIA--Drexel scored a pair of goals in the second half on its way to a 2-1 victory over visiting NJIT Tuesday evening in men's soccer non-conference action at Vidas Field.
The Dragons snapped a two-match skid, improving to 6-6-1 while the Highlanders dropped its fourth straight, moving to 3-10-1 to conclude the non-conference slate.
For NJIT, the Highlanders have dropped the last three-out-of-four matches by one goal, including a pair of 2-1 losses against Stony Brook and Drexel.
Drexel scored its first goal in the 55th minute behind Chris Donovan, who entered the match ranked 10th in the nation in goals and tied for 18th in points. Donovan collected his 10th goal of the season and 22nd point against the Highlanders.
NJIT evened the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute on a right-footed strike by junior Jose Adames, who tucked away his first goal of the season into the top right portion of the goal.
The Dragons regained the lead, 2-1, in the 85th minute on a goal by Joey Martini, his second of the season. Patrick Murphy was credited with the assist.
The Highlanders had an opportunity to tie the score at 2-2 a minute later on a shot by freshman Goncalo Franco but was denied by Drexel's keeper Stephen Kopsachilis.
NJIT's Caden Pellito registered his first career start in goal, combining for six saves.
Drexel outshot visiting NJIT, 17-to-10 (8-to-5 shot on goal) paced three different Dragons with three shots apiece. Adames led the Highlanders with three shots followed by Franco with two.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday, October 25 when the Highlanders wrap up its three-match road trip at Binghamton in America East Conference action. Kickoff is slated for 1pm on ESPN+.
