NEWARK, NJ--NJIT sophomore Kenna Squier's game-best 18 points wasn't enough as visiting UMass Lowell held on for a 58-53 win over NJIT in America East Conference women's basketball action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
With the win, UMass Lowell moves to 3-2 in the America East, 4-4 overall while NJIT drops to 2-3 in the league, 2-7 overall.
UMass Lowell had three double-figures led by Shamyjha Price team-best 16 points followed by Tiahna Sears combined for a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Denise Solis with 11 points.
Squier led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field while senior Ellyn Stoll registered 11 points and Lyzi Litwinko chipped in 10 points.
Freshman Lilly Anderson grabbed a career-best 11 rebounds in 20 minutes of action off the bench.
NJIT scored the first seven points of the game and extended its lead to eight, 10-2 early in the first period. UMass Lowell cut the deficit to five, 12-7, at the 4:44 mark. Both teams were scoreless in the final minutes of the period.
UMass Lowell outscored NJIT, 20-10, in the second period and knotted the game for the first time at 14-14 on a three-pointer by Niya Johnson with 7:19 on the clock. The River Hawks pushed its lead eight, 27-19, behind an 11-0 run. NJIT's Kiana Brereton connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key at the end of the quarter, trailing by five, 27-22, heading into the half.
Price led all players with eight points after the first 20 minutes while Litwinko led NJIT with six points.
NJIT cut the River Hawk margin to three, 30-27, after a three-pointer by Stoll just under the seven minute mark of the third quarter. A putback layup by Anderson tied the game at 30-all but UMass Lowell went on an 11-1 run for a nine-point advantage, 41-32. The Highlanders slimmed the visitors lead to five, scoring the final five points of the period, 41-36.
In a tight fourth quarter, the score saw three ties late in the period, the final at 51-51 on a pull up jumper by Squier with 1:06 left to go. UMass Lowell took a three-point advantage, 54-51, with :18 seconds as NJIT would get as close as one, 54-53, on a pair of free throws sank by Stoll. Price scored the final four points from the free throw line for UMass Lowell to hold on to a 58-53 victory.
The two teams will return to action on Sunday at 2pm inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
