UMass Lowell (5-4, 4-2 America East) was led by Denise Solis and Jaliena Sanchez team-best 13 points while Shamyha Price chipped in 10 points. Forward Tiahna Sears led all players with 11 rebounds as the River Hawks out-rebounded the Highlanders, 42-to-36.
NJIT (2-8, 2-4 America East) had two players in double-digits, paced by freshman Lyzi Litwinko with 13 points followed by classmate Grace Plummer with a career-best 12 points. Â
Litwinko filled up the stat sheet Sunday, leading the Highlanders on the glass with seven rebounds (tying her personal-best mark), six assists (a new personal-high) and two steals. Plummer connected on 4-of-8 from three-point range in 22 minutes off the bench for the Highlanders. Senior captain Ellyn Stoll added nine points and four rebounds.
Litwinko connected on a three-pointer from the top of the key for the first points of the game as both teams traded baskets, heading into the under five media timeout tied at 8-8. The back-and-forth affair continued as UMass Lowell held a one-point lead, 15-14, after the first 10. Litwinko scored seven points in the period, including two rebounds and two assists.
UMass Lowell scored the first seven points of the second stanza and used a 11-2 spurt in the second quarter to push its lead to double-digits, 10-point for a 26-16 lead. NJIT's Ellyn Stoll sparked a 6-0 run after consecutive three-pointers by Stoll and Kendle Dalrymple, cutting the lead to four, 26-22.
After the first 20 minutes, River Hawks Denise Solis led all scorers with 11 points while NJIT's Litwinko led the Highlanders with seven points, four rebounds and three assists.Â
Trailing 29-22 at the half, NJIT sank a trio of three-pointers in the third quarter, two coming from Grace Plummer, cutting the River Hawk deficit to eight, 39-31, with less than three-minutes in the quarter. UMass Lowell scored four straight points to end the quarter with a 10point lead, 43-33 lead.
After a basket by Litwinko to start the fourth quarter, UMass Lowell used a 5-1 spurt over the next 6:24 for a 48-36 advantage. Plummer connected on her third trey ball of the game, breaking the NJIT scoring drought, pulling within 11, 50-39, with 2:21 on the clock. NJIT slimmed the lead to four, 51-47, behind a 6-0 run, after a three-pointer by Plummer, her fourth of the game and old-fashioned three-point play by Stoll.
NJIT wraps up its six game homestead and will return to action next weekend when the Highlanders visit Maine on January 9-10. Tip-off for both games is slated for 1pm on ESPN+
