NJIT Athletics “Coaches Conference Series” with Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Danny Goncalves and Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan

NEWARK, NJ--The next NJIT Athletics "Coaches Conference Series", which will be a video Webex, covering the latest news on Highlander Athletics, will be men's volleyball head coach Danny Goncalves and Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan.  The series is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18 at 8:30pm.

The series will cover the impact of COVID-19 on the sport of men's volleyball, prospects for the Spring 2021 and other topics, concerning the sport.

All are welcome to join the Webex at 8:30pm by registering HERE.  An email with directions to join will be sent via email.

Before the season was shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Highlanders:
  • Sat with a 9-5 overall mark and victories over three nationally-ranked teams (One of which was top 10 win over Power 5 school; USC #12)
  • Defeated Ball State first time in program history
  • Started off the year with a 5-2 record (best record since the 2008 season)
  • Winners of three straight; 5-1 at home; 9-5 overall when spring season was canceled due to coronavirus pandemic
  • Winners of four straight (heading into EIVA play; Feb. 7)
  • Two players -- Alvaro Gimeno and Luca Berger earned AVCA All-America honors
  • Julian Meissner was selected Off the Block Freshman All-American 
  • Received votes in AVCA Men's Volleyball Poll during (Week 1, Week 3, Week 4).  Week one marked the first time the Highlanders received votes at the Division I-II level.
  • Six Highlanders were recognized to the 2020 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) All-Conference team, headed by Uvaldo Acosta Memorial Co-Player of the Year Alvaro Gimeno and Freshman of the Year Julian Meissner.
  • Seven players were selected to the 2020 Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) All-Academic team
  • AVCA National All-Academic Team Award
  • Roque Nido earned three major individual awards -- AVCA National Player of the Week (1.28.20), EIVA Offensive Player of the Week, Off the Block Setter of the Week
  • Nido voted by the fans Off the Block Player of the Month (January)
