NEWARK, NJ–The NJIT men's hockey team ended their home 2019-2020 season at the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House with 5-2 defeat to the Penn Quakers. The Highlanders finish with a home record of 2-9, currently have a record of 4-18 in ACHA games and finish 4-14 in CSCHC play. The Quakers win the season series at 2-0 and are 9-3 vs. NJIT in CSCHC era.
Penn scored 26 seconds into the game to jump to an early 1-0 lead.
Michael Caufield tied the game on a long stretch pass from
Dalton Smith midway in the 1 st period. That goal extended Caufield's point streak to 15 games, which leads the Colonial States. The Quakers would regain the lead with 6:54 remaining in the 1 st period on a shorthanded goal. That 2-1 lead would remain that way after the 1 st intermission.
The Highlanders would tie the game again at 2-2 on the power play when Caufield scored his 2 ndgoal of the game. That goal would be Caufield's 24 th goal of the season. Penn would once again get the lead on a goal with just over five and a half minutes remaining in the period. The Quakers would take a 3-2 lead into the locker room after two periods.
Penn would seal the game with two 3 rd period goals (one on the power play) to win the game by the final score of 5-2. NJIT had numerous great scoring chances in the period, but could not beat the Quakers goalie.
Brian Byrnes made a career high 49 saves on the evening in a great effort.
