Late Rally Falls Short For Men's Lacrosse In Loss At Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. --- The NJIT men's lacrosse team nearly erased a six-goal second half deficit before ultimately falling to the Monmouth Hawks Saturday afternoon at Kessler Stadium.

The loss moves NJIT to 1-1 on the season while Monmouth opened their 2020 campaign with a victory.

HIGHLIGHTS 1ST QUARTER
  • A low-scoring opening period saw Monmouth take a 3-0 lead.
  • NJIT matched Monmouth's shot total, 6-6, with Wilson taking half of the shots.
2ND QUARTER
  • Fogerty put NJIT on the board and cut Monmouth's lead to 3-1 less than two minutes into the quarter (13:41) with a score assisted by Colton Johnson.
  • Monmouth would add a pair of goals to extend their lead to 5-1.
  • After a called timeout with 19 seconds left in the half, Johnson scored an unassisted goal (0:10) that just snuck behind the Monmouth keeper and over the goal line.
3RD QUARTER
  • The Hawks tacked on two goals to start the second half and pushed the score to 7-2.
  • Fogerty would stop the Monmouth mini-run with his second score of the game from Kepes (7:09).
  • Another pair of goals would give Monmouth a 9-3 edge going into the final period.
4TH QUARTER
  • After been held scoreless for the first 45 minutes, Kaden started his hat trick and the NJIT rally with an unassisted goal at the 11:46 mark.
  • Kaden willed himself to another goal less than three minutes later (9:03) to pull within four (9-5).
  • Monmouth made up the two goals it gave up by the 6:15 mark, putting NJIT in a 11-5 bind with less than half the period remaining.
  • Wilson started the Highlanders' final push with his score at the 3:49 mark.
  • Kaden (2:22 via Fogerty) and Fogerty (1:24 via Johnson) clinched their hat tricks and brought Monmouth's lead back down to three (11-8).
  • Unfortunately, NJIT was only able to produce one more shot in the final 1:24.
OTHER NOTES
  • Kaden and Fogerty's hat tricks were the 22nd and 23rd three-goal performances in NJIT history and the first and second in their respective careers.
