Kennesaw State Tops Visiting NJIT; Ellyn Stoll Registers Career-Best 25 Points


KENNESAW, GA--
Kennesaw State had six players reach double-figures, defeating visiting NJIT, 85-62 in ASUN Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center.

 

The Owls improve to 13-14 overall, 6-9 in the ASUN while NJIT moves to 4-24 overall, 1-14 in the league.

 

Kennesaw State was paced by a team-high 18 points from Alexis Poole followed by Carlotta Gianolla (14), Amani Johnson (11), Breanna Hoover (11), Gabi Legister (11) and Gillian Piccolino (10).

 

Legister led Kennesaw State on the glass with seven rebounds as the Owls outrebounded the Highlanders 42-to-34.

 

NJIT's Ellyn Stoll registered a career-best 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range.  Freshman guard Kenna Squier combined for 15 points, five rebounds and five assists while senior forward Danielle Tunstall chipped in 10 points and led all players with eight rebounds on the boards, nearly missing a double-double.  Milena Bajic added six points off the bench for the Highlanders.

 

Kennesaw State jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead and extended its advantage to 22-7 after the first 10 minutes.  Ellyn Stoll led the Highlanders with five points.

 

NJIT opened the second quarter on a 6-4 spurt, cutting the Kennesaw State deficit to 14, 27-13, after a layup by Kenna Squier.  The Owls went on a 9-2 run in the final 4:02 for a 41-17 halftime lead.

 

Kennesaw State's Amani Johnson and Breanna Hoover led all scorers at the half with 11 points while NJIT's Danielle Tunstall led the Highlanders with eight points.

 

The Highlanders came out on fire in the third quarter, using a 9-2 spurt, slimming the Owls deficit to 17, 43-26, resulting in a Kennesaw State timeout.  Stoll scored five points in the run while Squier netted four points. After a pair of baskets by the Owls, NJIT scored six consecutive points, pulling with 15, 47-32, with six minutes to play.

 

Squier connected with a three-pointer just under the four-minute mark, closing the gap to within 14, 51-37, but the home team pushed it lead back over 20, after back-to-back three-pointers for a 59-37 score.  In the final 1:50, NJIT used a 7-2 run, cutting the deficit to 17, 61-44, capped by a three-pointer by Maria Fux from the top of the key at the buzzer.

 

Kennesaw State scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter, taking a 24-point advantage, 68-44.  NJIT closed the Owls gap to 14, 69-55, using an 11-2 spurt, capped by six straight points by Stoll at the 4:30 mark.  Kennesaw State closed out the game on a 15-7 spurt and secured the win home win with a 85-62 victory.

 

NJIT will conclude the season on Monday at 6pm (CT) when the Highlanders visit North Alabama in Florence, AL.
