FARMVILLE, VA - The NJIT baseball team scored early and often on Sunday en route to a 17-5 victory in the final contest of a three-game series hosted by Longwood this weekend. The teams split the first two games of the series before the Highlanders earned a decisive victory in Sunday's rubber match.
NJIT (4-3) scored four runs in the top of the first to take control and broke the game open with an eight-run sixth, which increased the lead to 14-2 over the Lancers (2-6).
The Highlanders belted out a season-high 19 hits in Sunday's victory and scored at least one run in seven different innings.
Leading the way offensively for NJIT were
Andrew Elcock,
Julio Marcano and
Jared Donnelly, who each recorded three hits. Marcano and fellow captain
Paul Franzoni led the squad with three RBI, while Elcock,
Daniel Helfgott and
Luke Longo each knocked in a pair of runs.
Franzoni and Longo both hit their first home runs of the season.
Tyler Cirone started on the mound for the Highlanders and tossed three innings before
Parker O'Neil came in to throw a pair of scoreless innings and earn his first collegiate victory.
NJIT will take a few days off before heading to Lewisburg, PA for a four-game series at Bucknell next weekend. First pitch in Friday's opening game is slated for 3pm, while Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 12pm and Sunday's finale is scheduled for 1pm.
