NASHVILLE, TN--NJIT's Danielle Tunstall and Kenna Squier combined for 37 points but the Highlanders fell just short at Lipscomb, 68-66, in ASUN Conference women's basketball action Monday evening inside Allen Arena.
Down by as many as 23 in the third quarter, NJIT (4-21, 1-11 ASUN) produced 49 second-half points and pulled to within one of the Lady Bisons, 67-66, on a three-pointer from the top of the key by Dani Evans with :05 remaining.
Lipscomb (6-20, 3-10 ASUN) made one of two at the other end, taking a two-point advantage, 68-66, and the Highlanders last second shot from half court was just short. Â
Tunstall finished with a game-best 22 points and Squier followed with 15 points for NJIT. Â
The forward from Willingboro, NJ, went 9-of-15 from the field while Squier finished 6-of-9. Tunstall grabbed nine rebounds as the Highlanders out-rebounded the Lady Bisons 35-to-25 on the glass. Squier dished out a personal-best eight assists for NJIT.
Junior guard Ellyn Stoll added eight points while Evans finished with seven off the bench for the Highlanders.
NJIT connected on 10 three-pointers paced by Stoll, Evans and Maria Fux with two each.
Lipscomb was led by three double-digit players -- Taylor Clark (17), Carleigh Short (16) and Casey Collier (14). Emily Kmec led all players with 11 rebounds.
After jumping out to an early 4-0 lead, Lipscomb scored five straight for a 5-4 advantage. Ellyn Stoll connected on a three-pointer pulling NJIT within one, 8-7. Lipscomb ended the first quarter on a 7-2 spurt, taking a 12-8 lead. NJIT's Tunstall scored six points in the first 10 minutes while Taylor Hammock netted seven points off the bench.
Lipscomb used a 14-4 spurt to begin the second stanza, pushing its lead to double-digits, 26-12, over the first four minutes. NJIT cut the Lady Bisons deficit to 11, on a three-pointer drained by Stoll. Lipscomb scored the last six points for a 34-17 lead after the first 20.
Tunstall and Hammock shared game-high honors through the first 20, scoring 10 points apiece. Lipscomb connected on six three-pointers.
NJIT exploded for 22 third quarter points and used an 11-2 run in the final four minutes, closing the Lipscomb gap to 13, 51-38.
Squier scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, cutting the Lady Bisons lead to single digits, nine, 51-42, with 8:50 on the clock. NJIT connected on a pair of three-pointers late in the quarter by Samantha Schultz and Danielle Tunstall,which sparked a 10-0 run slimming the lead to three, 61-58. Â
NJIT freshman guard Squier sank a straight-away three-pointer, pulling the visitors within three, 64-61, with :19 and on the next possession by two, 65-63 on a turnaround jumper inside the paint by Squier with :08 on the clock.
NJIT will wrap up the home portion of its schedule with a two-game homestand hosting FGCU on February 22. Tip-off will be slated for 1pm. The home season will conclude on Monday, February 24 at 7pm, welcoming Stetson to NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. Monday will mark Senior Day for three graduating seniors -- Danielle Tunstall, Milena Bajic and Tracey Brereton.   Both games will be streamed live on ESPN3.
