NEWARK, NJ--NJIT and Vermont split the weekend America East Conference women's basketball series as the Catamounts cruised to a 65-45 victory over the Highlanders on Monday afternoon inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
In the first game of the weekend, NJIT defeated Vermont 70-60 led by a career-best 20 points and nine rebounds from Kimi Evans.
On Monday, Vermont was led by Madelyn Roel and Josie Larkins team-best 12 points followed by Delaney Richason, who recorded a double-double, notching 10 points and 11 rebounds.
NJIT's freshman Lyzi Litwinko registered a career-best 14 points (eight coming in the fourth quarter) on 6-of-11 shooting from the field while the Highlanders other double-figure scorer was Kenna Squier, who added 12 points. Maria Fux and Lilly Anderson paced the Highlanders with five rebounds.
Vermont exploded for 22 first-quarter points after taking an early, 16-4 lead, holding a 13-point advantage, 22-9 after the first 10 minutes of action.
The Catamounts continued its hot shooting into the second period, using an 11-3 run to extend its lead to 20, 32-12, at the under five media. In the final 3:15, NJIT used a short 6-3 spurt to head into the half down 18, 39-21.
Hot-shooting Vermont finished the first half shooting, 45.9 percent from the field, paced by Larkins and Emily Utterbeck with eight points. Litwinko paced the Highlanders with six points.
Vermont scored the first seven points of the third stanza and a Grace Plummer three-pointer, sparked a 8-1 run in the final 6:30 for a 47-29 score. Squier went 3-for-4 from the field in the run.
Litwinko led the Highlanders with eight points in the fourth quarter and pulled NJIT to within 15 of the Catamounts, 50-44, the closest the Highlanders would cut the deficit.
NJIT will conclude its six-game homestead on January 2-3 when the Highlanders host UMass Lowell inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. Tipoff on Saturday is slated for 4pm and Sunday at 2pm. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
