NEWARK, NJ--Lipscomb exploded for 44 second-half points led by three double-figure scorers as the Lady Bisons registered a 65-57 victory at NJIT in an ASUN Conference matinee on Monday afternoon inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
Lipscomb snaps a three-game skid, improving to 5-14 overall, 2-4 in the ASUN while the Highlanders move to 3-15 overall, 0-5 in league play.
NJIT held a three-point lead after the first 10 minutes, 15-12 and went into the locker room with an eight-point advantage, 29-21. The Lady Bisons poured in 20 points in the third quarter, outscoring NJIT, 20-13, and netted 24 points in the fourth stanza to secure an ASUN road win.
Guard Taylor Clark led all scorers with 19 points followed by Jalyn Holcomb (18 points) and Casey Collier (15 points). Holcomb finished 6-for-12 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
The Lady Bisons, which entered the game fifth in the nation in free throw percentage, finished 20-for-26 (76.9 percent).
Senior forward Danielle Tunstall combined for her fifth double-double of the season (16th of her career), netting 14 points and grabbing a game-best 14 rebounds, including three blocks. As a team, NJIT out-rebounded the Lady Bisons 41-to-28 (four shy the season-high mark).
Freshman guard Kenna Squier led the Highlanders with 18 points, shooting 6-for-11 from the field, 2-of-5 from three-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Junior guard Ellyn Stoll, coming off a career-best 21 points against Kennesaw State on Saturday, chipped in eight points and pulled down four rebounds.
Lipscomb took an early 10-5 lead and the Highlanders answered with an 10-2 run in the last 5:06 to take a 15-12, including seven straight points to end the first quarter.
NJIT continued its momentum into the second quarter, netting the first five points, pushing the Highlander lead to eight, 20-12 at the 7:12 mark. The Lady Bisons answered with a 8-2 run, slimming the Highlanders lead to three, 23-20. NJIT knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to end the first half, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Danielle Tunstall.
Tunstall led all scorers with nine points and rebounds with seven through the first 20.
NJIT pushed its lead to double-digits on two occasions in the third stanza, 36-26, on a three-pointer by Kenna Squier at the 6:30 mark. With three minutes left to play, Lipscomb scored eight straight and used a 12-3 spurt, closing the Highlander gap to within one, 42-41.
After four straight by NJIT to open the fourth quarter, Lipscomb scored 15 consecutive points, extending its lead to 56-46 just under the four-minute mark. NJIT cut the lead down to as many as seven, 58-51, on a jumper by Maria Fux. Lipscomb stayed ahead by eight until the final buzzer, securing a 65-57 victory.
NJIT will make its second ASUN Conference road trip of the season this weekend, traveling to Fort Myers, Florida to face FGCU on Saturday at 4pm and make a trip up to DeLand, Florida and tip-off against Stetson on Monday at 7pm. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
