VIDEO: NJIT Highlights at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Jacksonville scored 49 second-half points led by Destiny Marshall's game-high 28 points, leading the Dolphins to a 88-67 home victory in ASUN Conference women's basketball action at the Historic Swisher Gymnasium Monday evening.
The win for Jacksonville snaps a five-game skid and notches its first win in ASUN action, improving to 9-7 and 1-2 in the league while the Highlanders move to 3-13 overall, 0-3 in the ASUN.
NJIT, trailing by just five points at the half, 39-34, was outscored by Jacksonville 49-33 in the second half. Â
Marshall one of three double-figure scorers for the Dolphins, shot an impressive 12-for-13 from the field followed by 16 points, seven assists from Kiara Meeks on 6-fo-10 from the field while Da'Nasia Shaw chipped in 12 points.
Visiting NJIT had three double-digit scorers paced by Danielle Tunstall and Milena Bajic each netting 14 points followed by Kenna Squier with 11 points. Tunstall shot 6-for-10 from the field and grabbed six rebounds while Bajic pulled down eight rebounds to pace the team on the boards. Bajic and Maddie Martin both dished out a team-high four assists.
After an early 8-6 advantage for NJIT on a three-pointer by Maria Fux, Jacksonville used an 8-2 spurt over the next minute, taking a 14-10 lead at the four minute mark. With less than three to play in the quarter, NJIT went on a 6-3 run, closing the Dolphin gap to three, 19-16.
Jacksonville scored the first basket of the second period and NJIT scored five in a row, knotting the game at 21-all. The Dolphins scored six straight, extending its lead to 27-21 at the 7:32 mark. NJIT took a 28-27 lead after seven straight from the Highlanders top scorer Danielle Tunstall. Jacksonville regained its lead 33-29 at with 2:23 left to play but NJIT's Milena Bajic connected a three-pointer and a pair of free throws by Samantha Schultz put the Highlanders ahead 34-33. Jacksonville capped the final 1:24 with six consecutive, heading into the locker room up five, 39-34.
Tunstall led all scorers at the half with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field followed by Milena Bajic with eight points, connecting on a pair of three pointers from beyond the arc.
Jacksonville bursted for 25 third-quarter points and extended its lead to 64-49. NJIT used a 6-2 run in the quarter sparked by a running layup by NJIT's Ellyn Stoll at the 5:23 mark, slimming the Dolphin lead to 11, 55-44, just under the four minute mark. Â
The Dolphins pushed its advantage to 22, 74-52, after opening the period with a 10-2 run and never looking back to secure its first win in conference action with an 88-67 victory.
NJIT will play its next two games at home inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center. The Highlanders will host Kennesaw State on Saturday at 1pm as part of a doubleheader with the NJIT men, who will welcome the Owls at 4pm. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
