NEWARK, NJ--The NJIT women's volleyball team will open its home slate on Tuesday, September 3, welcoming St. John's to the Wellness and Events Center.

The Trevino File
NJIT Head Coach Pedro Trevino is in his first season coaching the Highlanders after being hired in February following an eight-year tenure as the head men's volleyball coach at Rutgers-Newark. Trevino is a 2001 NJIT graduate and played four seasons on the Highlanders' men's volleyball team and one season on the men's basketball team. As a senior, Trevino ranked among the nation's top setters and was named NJIT's Male Athlete of the Year.

Core Four
Trevino's squad is extremely young this season, but he will look upon his four seniors - Liz Benson, Madi Busler, Alahna Diaz, and Olivia Welsch, to provide leadership. All four seniors were in the starting lineup for Friday's season-opener at St. Francis Brooklyn.

The New Crew
Trevino isn't the only new face in the Highlander's women's volleyball program this season as eight freshman also joined the team this summer. Seven of the eight saw action at the Terrier Classic this weekend including Katelyn Bliesner, Courtney Branch and Sarah Merritt, who each started all three matches. Merritt led the team with 27 kills and was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.

All-Time Series
Tuesday's match will be the third meeting between the Highlanders and Red Storm, and first since 2012. St. Johns won each of the previous two matches in straight sets.

Scouting St. John's
St. John's is also looking for its first win of the season after going winless in three matches in Hawaii this weekend. The Red Storm, which were selected to finish third in the BIG EAST, were defeated by Washington, Hawaii and San Diego. Veteran head coach Joanne Persico is in her 26th year leading St. John's and was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year last season after guiding the Red Storm to a 23-win season.

Up Next
Following Tuesday's match, the Highlanders will return to the court on Friday and Saturday at the Knights Volleyball Classic, hosted by Farleigh Dickinson in Teaneck, NJ. NJIT will take on Quinnipiac Friday at 3pm, Morgan State Saturday at 10am and the host Knights Saturday at 5:30pm.
