NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT men's lacrosse team ended its home schedule for the month of March with a close 14-11 loss to the Wagner Seahawks Saturday afternoon at Rutgers-Newark's Alumni Field.
Vincent D'Agostino,
Jackson Boyd and
Joe Covino set new career highs with their scoring outputs - D'Agostino and Boyd recorded their first career hat tricks and Covino scored two goals for the first time ever - while
Collin Fogerty,
Max Wilson, and
Noah Kepes added a goal apiece. Fogerty also dished out a career-best three assists while
Aaron Forster added two and
Jackson Boyd and
Ryan Kaden helped on one goal each.
John Tachon set a new season-high for NJIT (1-9) with eight ground balls and Fogerty caused three turnovers on the day.
The Highlanders won the first quarter, 6-4, as Covino and Boyd led the charge with two goals each. Wilson put NJIT on the board 36 seconds into the contest and after two goals from Wagner (2-7), D'Agostino and Covino put the Highlanders back ahead, 3-2, with 8:50 left in the period. The Seahawks added another pair of scores (4-3) but NJIT ended the quarter with three straight goals in a four-and-a-half minute stretch.
Wagner turned the tide in the second frame after outscoring NJIT 6-1 to change a two-point Highlander lead into a three-point Seahawk advantage.
A man-up score from Kepes and goals from Boyd and Fogerty in less than 30 seconds helped the Highlanders trim the lead to two (12-10) but Wagner kept its distance from NJIT with a 2-1 fourth quarter.
