NEWARK, NJ—Liberty duo Bridgette Rettstatt (20 points, 8 rebounds) and KK Barbour (15 points, 9 rebounds) led the visiting Flames to a 58-39 victory against NJIT Saturday afternoon in women's basketball ASUN Conference action at NJIT's Wellness and Events Center in the home finale for the Highlanders.
In pregame ceremonies, NJIT honored its six graduating seniors –
Kelly Guarino,
Amber Morgan,
Jordan Ireland,
Jillian Libby,
Amarri Trueheart and
Tatianna Torres.
With the loss against the Flames, NJIT will be the eighth seed in the 2019 ASUN Conference Tournament and will visit FGCU on Friday, March 8 at 7pm inside Alico Arena. This will be the third all-time meeting in postseason in which the Eagles and Highlanders will square off.
NJIT (6-22, 3-12 ASUN) was led by sophomore forward
Dez Allen's 13 points and six rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench while sophomore guard
Ellyn Stoll added 10 points. Junior forward
Danielle Tunstall added eight points and four rebounds.
Liberty hit six of its first eight field goal attempts, opening the game with 13-2 advantage and extended its lead to 11-points, 17-6, into the second period.
NJIT's
Ellyn Stoll scored five points during a 10-2 NJIT run which trimmed the Highlanders' deficit to 25-21, 1:58 before halftime. Liberty answered with an 8-0 burst to close out the half, with KK Barbour tallying the final five points, holding a 33-21 halftime advantage.
To open the third period, Liberty extended its overall run to 15-0 and take a 40-21 lead.
NJIT's
Danielle Tunstall scored six fourth-quarter points for the Highlanders, and the home team pulled to within 11 (49-38) on
Dez Allen's three-pointer with 3:33 to play, the closest the Highlanders would come to the visiting Flames.
The Highlanders will close out the 2019 regular season at North Florida on Tuesday at 7pm.
