KENNESAW, GA. – The NJIT Highlanders (18-7, 6-4 ASUN) fell on the road to Kennesaw State (5-20, 2-8 ASUN), 63-62.
San Antonio Brinson led the team in scoring with 16 points, followed by
Diandre Wilson with 11 points.
Zach Cooks and
Abdul Lewis tallied 10 points each, while Lewis finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
Brinson and Lewis came out of the gates firing, shooting a combined 6-6 from the field in the opening six minutes of the game.
Brinson would finish the half a perfect 3-3 from the field for seven points along with three rebounds.
NJIT was active on defense early, holding Kennesaw to 2-13 field goals midway through the half.
With just under five minutes remaining, both teams began heating up, trading baskets on six consecutive possessions, featuring a pair of three pointers from Wilson.
The senior finished as the Highlanders' top scorer for the half, shooting 50% from the field for nine points.
NJIT as a team shot 50% from the field in the first half and closed by hitting their final three field goals to take a two-point lead into the locker room, 30-28.
Both teams emerged from the break playing physical basketball, combining for 12 fouls in the first seven minutes.
Five different Highlanders scored to open the half, but the Owls gained their first advantage by the 10-minute mark, thanks to a string of buckets from Tyler Hooker.
NJIT came roaring back shooting 6-6 from the field, including seven consecutive points from Brinson, in a five-minute stretch to regain the lead by the three minute mark, 58-56.
Kennesaw State hit a three pointer to take the lead with 1:20 remaining, only to be answered by a layup from Cooks with 57 seconds left.
The Owls hit another jumper, but Wilson hit two clutch free throws with 24 seconds left to regain the lead once more.
However, Kennesaw's Ugo Obineke hit the game-winning shot with 11 seconds left, Gibbs missed a well-defended shot with five seconds left and Brinson caught and shot with 0.9 seconds left, but the shot was high and Highlanders fell on the road.
NJIT heads south to Fort Myers, Florida, to take on Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday, February 13, at 7 p.m. ET. (TV: ESPN+).
Finally, the Highlanders return home on Saturday, February 16, when they will host North Florida at 4 p.m. ET.
