WEST POINT, NY—Army West Point edged visiting NJIT, 4-3, in non-conference men's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Lictenburg Tennis Center.
With the win, Army West Point moves to 2-7 on the young season while the Highlanders drop its second straight match and stand at 2-4.
"Always tough to play Army on the road," head coach Ira Miller added. "We came out firing in the doubles and came within a match point for the doubles point at second doubles. Lukas (Zvikas), Zac (Castagna) and Abdullah (Fouad) played some of their best singles of the year. This will give us good momentum going into Sunday's match vs Bryant.
The Black Knights opened the doubles contest, clinching the opening match points, earning wins at second and third doubles. NJIT duo of Tomi Antoljak and Zac Castagna were 7-5 winners at the first spot.
Army West Point picked up the first win in singles action at the fifth spot, taking a 2-0 lead.
NJIT co-captain Lukas Zvikas recorded a straight set victory at second singles, topping Diego Huttepain, 7-5. 6-4.
A three-set tilt at the sixth spot, gave the home team a 3-1 advantage.
Castagna posted a straight set win at fourth singles and Abdullah Fouad followed with a win at the third spot, knotting the match at 3-3.
The match came down to first singles, which featured NJIT's Antoljak and Army West Point's Myles Conlin. Conlin recorded an identical score victory, 7-5, 7-5, to hold off the Highlanders and secure a 4-3 victory.
NJIT will be back in action on Sunday at 12pm when the Highlanders face Bryant in West Point.
