NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT men's lacrosse team played its first home game of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 12-4 to the University of Delaware Blue Hens at Rutgers-Newark's Alumni Field.
Sophomore
Collin Fogerty replicated his performance from last week's game at Lafayette by scoring half of the Highlanders' four total goals, marking the first time the Mantua native has had multi-goal games in back-to-back contests.
Fellow sophomore
Alexzander Hunt kept the Highlanders in the game for as long as possible by stopping an NJIT single-game record 22 shots in only the fifth start of his career. Senior
Kevin Falteisek led the team with four ground balls and a career-high five caused turnovers.
The first half of the game proved to be a defensive showdown between the two teams. Hunt (13) and Delaware goalkeeper Matt DeLuca (8) stopped a combined 21 shots in the first 30 minutes of the game. Only a goal halfway through the first quarter and a pair of second quarter scores separated the Highlanders from the Blue Hens in the first half.
The second half opened with Fogerty trimming Delaware's lead to 3-1 with a goal two-and-a-half minutes into the third period. Delaware would score four more times in the period to go up 7-2 but Fogerty would strike again with less than 40 seconds left in the quarter.
Delaware would score first in the final frame (12:30) to push its lead to 8-2 but senior
Ryan Darrow answered less than a minute later to make the score 8-3. Unfortunately, another 3-0 run for the Blue Hens put Delaware into double figures and put the game out of reach for the home team.
NJIT will hit the road on Saturday, February 23 to face VMI in Lexington, Va. before returning to Newark for its next home game against Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 2. The VMI game will start at 12 noon and the Quinnipiac contest is scheduled for a 4pm start.
