NEW YORK--Hot-shooting Columbia had four players in double-figures and shot 59.2 percent from the field and 54.2 percent from three-point range led by a game-high 18 points from Abbey Hsu en route to a 99-43 victory Saturday afternoon in women's basketball non-conference action at Levien Gymnasium.
Columbia, which has won six in a row and the last seven-out-of-eight games, improves to 7-3 on the season while NJIT moves to 3-9.
NJIT will close out the 2019 calendar year at Binghamton on December 30. Tip-off is slated for 7pm on ESPN+.
Columbia combined for a season-best 13 three-point field goals (13-for-24), led by Hsu's game-best 18 points on 7-for-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from downtown followed by Riley Casey (11 points), Sienna Durr (10 points) and Janiya Clemmons (10 points).
All 12 Lion players scored at least four points in the win and as a team shot 59.7 percent (40-for-67) from the field.
For NJIT, sophomore guard Samantha Schultz netted a career-best nine points, shooting 2-for-4 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line, coming off the bench.
Forward Danielle Tunstall and guard Maddie Martin each added eight points for the Highlanders. Freshman Kenna Squier chipped in seven points, grabbed five rebounds and five assists.
Columbia, which last played on December 9 at Davidson, got off to a 8-2 start in the opening five minutes led by Hannah Pratt with four points. After a wrap-around layup by Danielle Tunstall a three-pointer by Maddie Martin out of the media timeout, cut the lead to three, 8-5, Columbia scored eight straight, extending its advantage to 16-5.
Kenna Squier sank a pair of free throws at the 2:03 mark to get the Highlanders back on the board but Columbia closed out the first period on a 10-2 run, pushing its lead to 26-9.
Columbia continued its hot shooting into the second quarter from three-point range, combining for 28 second-quarter points, heading into halftime with a 32-point lead, 54-22.
The Lions finished the first half 10-17 from beyond the arc, shooting 58.8 percent and 62.9 percent from the field led by Abbey Hsu's game-high 11 points, who shot 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from downtown. Martin led the NJIT with eight points, on 3-of-4 from the field and 2-for-3 from three-point range.
Columbia outscored NJIT in the third quarter, 25-11, shooting 76.9 percent from the field (10-for-13) and 20-10 in the fourth quarter en route to a 99-43 win.
The New Year brings the start of ASUN Conference play, which lands the Highlanders at home, hosting Liberty on January 4. NJIT will play their final 15 games in the ASUN.
