Tunstall Posts Double-Double in NJIT’s Loss at Air Force Academy

USAF ACADEMY, CO—NJIT senior forward Danielle Tunstall recorded a double-double (14 points and 15 rebounds) in Highlanders 68-48 loss at Air Force Academy Friday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Clune Arena.

Tunstall's 15 rebounds is a new career-best for the 5-foot-11 forward.  The 15 rebounds are five shy the Division I single season record (20) held by Leah Horton.  Tunstall was efficient from the field, shooting 7-for-12.

Junior Ellyn Stoll and freshman Kenna Squier each netted 11 points.  Stoll finished 3-for-11 from the field and 3-of-8 from three-point range while Squier, who opened her Highlander debut against Colgate, scoring 14 points, followed up with an 11-point performance, grabbing six rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Dani Evans came off the bench to score six points (both three-pointers) in 16 minutes for NJIT.

Air Force was led by two double-figure scorers — Riley Snyder (19 points) and Kaelin Immel (18 points).  Guard Emily Conroe paced the Falcons on the boards with 10.

Air Force got off to a quick start in Friday's matinee contest, taking a 9-0 lead 3:30 into the first period.  NJIT stopped the Falcons run at the 6:12 mark on a layup by leading rebounder Danielle Tunstall.  Air Force continued its hot streak, scoring six consecutive points, increasing its advantage to 14, 16-2.

NJIT surged back sparked by a layup by Tunstall at the 3:43 mark, using a 7-2 spurt, cutting the Falcon lead to single digits, eight, 18-10, on a three-point play by sophomore Samantha Schultz.

The Highlanders took control early in the second period, opening the quarter on a 12-4 run, cutting the Falcon lead to within four, 25-21, capped by a fast break layup off a turnover by Air Force by Squier with 3:15 on the clock.

Air Force closed out the first half on a 8-3 run, taking a nine-point advantage, heading into the half.  Tunstall led the way for the Highlanders, netting six points and pulling down nine rebounds.

The home team found its rhythm in the third quarter, outscoring the Highlanders, 19-4, in the opening six minutes for a 52-28 lead and closed out the period with a 60-36 advantage.

NJIT will return to action on Sunday at 2pm (ET) when the Highlanders visit Colorado in Boulder.
