Ellyn Stoll and
Dani Evans each netted 14 points but it wasn't enough as Colorado topped the visiting Highlanders 80-57 in women's basketball non-conference action at CU Events Center Sunday afternoon.
Colorado had four players reach double-figures, paced by junior Mya Hollingshed with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting to lead the Buffs. Senior Quinessa Caylao-Do added 12 points while Peanut Tuitele and Leslia Finau each finished with 10 points. Freshman Jaylyn Sherrod handed out 11 of the team's 23 assists in her collegiate debut.
Stoll finished the game with 14 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the field (4-of-7) from three-point range while freshman
Dani Evans added 14 points of her own, coming off the bench, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Senior forward
Danielle Tunstall added nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks for the Highlanders.
In 19 minutes of action off the bench,
Samantha Schultz combined for eight points, three rebounds and two assists.
The Highlanders early offense was fueled from long range — knocking down five three-pointers in the first quarter to keep within five points, 20-15, after 10 minutes.
NJIT totaled 21 of its 29 first-half points from behind the three-point line, hitting seven threes in the first half.
Colorado shot 54.4 percent (6-11) in the third quarter to keep the 12-point halftime lead and a 17-point lead midway through the third quarter, but the visiting Highlanders shot an impressive 57.1 percent (8-14) out of the break to keep pace with the Buffs in the quarter.
The Buffs held NJIT to 1-of-10 shooting and outscored the Highlanders 18-7 in the final 10 minutes.
The Highlanders and Quakers will meet for the third-straight year on November 13 in Newark at 7pm. The Quakers are coming off an Ivy League regular season championship last season, their sixth-straight 20+ win season and seventh-straight postseason appearance.
