Liberty Tops NJIT in ASUN Conference Volleyball Action


NEWARK, NJ—Casey Goodwin posted a match-best 15 kills, leading visiting Liberty to a 3-1 victory over NJIT Sunday afternoon in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action at the Wellness and Events Center.

Liberty, who remains unbeaten in ASUN Conference action, moves to 4-0 on the season and 7-10 overall while the Highlanders fall to 0-4 in the ASUN, 2-16 overall.

The visiting Flames picked up a 25-21 victory in the first set paced by Goodwins five kills.  NJIT responded with a 25-21 win of their own in the second frame, knotting the match at 1-1, behind Madi Busler's six kills. 

Liberty won the third set, 25-21, which saw 12 ties and two lead changes and secured the 3-1 victory, notching a 25-14 victory in the fourth set.

In addition to Goodwin's match-best 15 kills, Anna Gragg posted 10 kills followed by Kailey Macy's nine kills.  Setter Hannah Morris piled up 52 assists and libero Margaret Latchford combined for 17 digs.

Liberty held a 13-to-4 team blocking advantage paced by six block assists by Macy.  The Flames edged the Highlanders in the service ace category, 7-to-5, led by Goodwin's three aces.

NJIT's Busler notched 13 kills on 34 attempts, combining for a .265 hitting percentage.  Udo Nwosu added eight kills – five coming in the second set.

Highlander setter Liz Benson piled up 23 assists while Marissa Soistman added eight assists, five digs and two kills.

Senior libero Adriana Nieto, who paces the ASUN Conference in digs per set, led the match with 21 digs.  Olivia Welsch just missed notching double-digit digs, posting nine.

Senior middle Jovana Baosic posted three of the Highlanders five aces.

NJIT will make its first ASUN Conference road trip of the season, visiting Stetson on October 5 and Jacksonville on October 6.  Both matches are slated to start at 6pm.
