HILLSIDE, NJ—Freshman
Fiona Wright scored a pair of goals and sophomore
Katrina Nguyen-DeMary collected two assists in NJIT's 4-1 victory over Fairfield Sunday afternoon on the campus of Kean University East Campus Facility.
The win is the second straight for the Highlanders, who move to 2-1-1 on the young season while the Stags suffer its first loss, falling to 3-1.
NJIT had three different goal scorers in the victory – sophomore transfer
Tara Walenczyk (23:20), sophomore
Jennifer Callaghan (37:24) and Wright (52:14; 64:16).
In the last two matches, Wright has buried three goals, good for six points and with Nguyen-DeMary's two assists against Fairfield, the sophomore paces the team with three assists.
Freshman
Angela Harris tallied her first collegiate assist on Callaghan's goal.
Graduate student
Amelia Sapirman notched her second consecutive win in goal, allowing just one goal and making seven saves in 90 minutes. Sapirman, who has played in four matches this season has allowed only two goals in 380:00 minutes of action.
The Highlanders got on the board in the 24
th minute after a goal by Walenczyk assisted by Nguyen-DeMary. Nguyen-DeMary played the ball over the Fairfield defensive line to Walenczyk, who beat the keeper, settled the ball and tucked away her first goal of the season.
In the 27
th minute, Walenczyk crossed the ball from the right side to
Brooke McGee inside the box, who headed the ball, but Fairfield keeper Aytana Muschajew stretched out for the save.
Fairfield had a pair of back-to-back shots in the 30
th and 31
st minute, both saved by Sapirman, keeping the visiting Stags off the board.
NJIT added an insurance goal in the 38
th minute on a goal by Callaghan assisted by Harris for a 2-0 lead over the Stags. The goal was the first of the season for Callaghan.
At the half, NJIT held an 8-6 advantage in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks.
NJIT's Wright scored her second goal of the season in the 53
rd minute assisted by Nguyen-DeMary. Wright's left-footed shot from the top of the box, bounced over the Fairfield keeper and into the net.
Fairfield got on the board in the 55
th minute on a header off a corner kick by Mel Hingher, assisted by Gabby Diodati.
Wright scored her second goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 65
th minute, giving the Highlanders a 4-1 cushion.
The Highlanders edged the Stags in overall shots (15-14) and corner kicks (7-5).
NJIT will wrap up its four match homestead on Friday, August 31 at 3:30 when the Highlanders host UMass Lowell at Kean University East Campus Facility.
