LEWISBURG, PA – NJIT women's volleyball fell 3-1 to Youngstown State in their second match at the Bucknell Tournament on Saturday morning.
The Highlanders (0-2) were led by freshman
Udo Nwosu who registered nine kills and
Marina Markaki who made eight kills and boasted a .412 hitting percentage.
The Highlanders produced eight blocks to the Penguins four. Leading the team with five blocks each were
Jovana Baosic and
Liz Benson, while Benson also grabbed 32 assists, and libero
Adriana Nieto posted 14 digs.
Youngstown State (2-0) received a game-high 16 kills from Margaux Thompson, a game-high 23 digs and 37 assists from Alexia Byrnes.
Down 5-1 in the first set, the Highlanders bounced back grabbing the next four points to tie the game at five. NJIT pulled ahead with three straight kills from Nwosu to take a 14-10 lead, that they would not relinquish, winning the first set 25-22.
The Penguins came back and took the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-18.
The Highlanders were down 4-1 in the fourth set and came back to tie it up at 6-6, and then scored three straight points to go up 9-6. NJIT held the lead until Youngstown State tied it up at 14-14.
The Penguins would take the 15-14 lead with a kill by Sarah Varcolla, and they would keep the lead and win the final set 25-21.
The Highlanders play their final match at the Bucknell Tournament at 3pm today against Saint Peter's.
