Highlanders Drop Final Match of Bucknell Tournament 3-2 to Saint Peter’s; Nieto Makes Tournament Team

LEWISBURG, PA – Senior Adriana Nieto was named to the Bucknell Tournament Team, despite the Highlanders third loss in their final match against Saint Peter's 3-2.

Libero Nieto posted a game-high 43 digs in the loss, and 67 on the weekend averaging 5.58 digs per set.

Four other Highlanders posted over 12 digs with Liz Benson (21), Olivia Welsch (14), Udo Nwosu (12), and Alahna Diaz (13).

Two Highlanders posted double-doubles in the loss, with freshman Nwosu getting 15 kills and 12 digs and junior Benson making 45 assists and 21 digs.

Nwosu's 15 kills led her team, follow by Jovana Baosic with nine and Marina Markaki and Makayla Greenfield posting eight each.

The Peacock's (1-2) grabbed their first win of the season with help from Alanis Alvarado who posted a game-high 21 kills and 29 digs for her team.

Natalia Carbonell Torres and Angelleyshka Curbelo each had 11 kills each, with Torres adding six block assists and Curbelo 15 digs.

Four of the five sets were settled within four points of each other.

NJIT took the first set 25-23, with Saint Peter's up 23-22 and scoring the final three points with a service error and two kills by Greenfield and Nwosu.

In the largest margin set, the Peacock's took the second set 25-17, and then the third set 25-22.

The Highlanders fought back in the fourth set winning 25-21, scoring four straight points to extend their lead 13-6, a lead they would not give up for the rest of the set.

The fifth set was another close set with the Peacock's taking a 7-3 lead.

NJIT cut the lead to 14-13 with three errors from Saint Peter's and a kill by Greenfield but couldn't hold on for the win and a kill by Alvarado ended the set 15-13.

The Highlanders will compete at the Terrier Classic next weekend hosted by St.Francis Brooklyn, with matches against the Terrier's on Friday at 3pm, Delaware State on Saturday at 11:30am, and Bucknell on Saturday at 4:30pm.
