FAIRFIELD, CT – NJIT men's volleyball won in comeback fashion, 3-2 against EIVA opponent Sacred Heart on Friday night.
The Highlanders keep their playoff hopes alive with the win and a 4-7 conference record, while Sacred Heart drops to 1-10 in EIVA play.
Alvaro Gimeno posted a match-high 25 points on 19 kills, a match-high four aces and four blocks.
Piotr Namiotko led the match in kills with 21 and five blocks.
Bailey Mundy made a season-high nine kills and
Kevin Myren and
Luca Berger tallied eight kills each, with Berger registering a match-high nine blocks.
Setter
Cameron Tait produced 51 assists and libero
Shannon Heckman posted 10 digs.
For Sacred Heart Jakob Karlsson led his team in kille (15) and aces (3), while Emerson Waumans tallied nine kills and five blocks with Taylor Bloomquist also adding five blocks.
Noah Riccetti made 34 assists and Joshua Ayzenberg produced a match-high 12 digs.
Things were even after the second set, with the Highlanders winning the first set 25-23 and SHU taking the second 25-21.
The third set went in favor of Sacred Heart in an extra point match 29-27, who needed only one more win to take the match.
The Highlanders came from behind and won the fourth 25-18 after scoring five consecutive points to take a commanding 21-14 lead that they would not give up.
Sacred Heart took and early 5-2 lead in the fifth, and the close set that went into extra points posted three lead changes and seven ties.
SHU tied things up at 16-16 on a kill from Rob Chatterton, but the Highlanders would take the last two points on a kill by Gimeno and a block by Namiotko and Berger to end the game 18-16.
The Highlanders continue EIVA play tomorrow when they travel to Massachusetts to play Harvard at 4pm.
