Baseball Defeats No. 25 Jacksonville in Final Game of ASUN Series

JACKSONVILLE, FL – NJIT picked up its second win over a top-25 team, topping No. 25 Jacksonville, 3-2, to conclude the three-game ASUN Conference series on Sunday.

Sunday's win marks the second win over a top-25 team after the Highlanders defeated No. 22 FGCU on April 8.

The Dolphins were the first to score, in the bottom of the first.

NJIT tied it up in the fourth on a single through the right side from freshman C Paul Franzoni, scoring fellow freshman 3B David Marcano.

Franzoni was 2-for-4 on the day and Marcano went 2-for-3.

Two batters later, with bases loaded and no out, 1B Alex Burman, hit into a double play, but scored CF Michael Anastasia.

The Highlanders added another in the seventh, with two outs SS Justin Etts doubled down the left field line. The next batter DH Evan Pietronico singled to left center scoring Etts for a 3-1 score.  Etts finished 2-for-5.

Jacksonville tried to make a comeback, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, but Highlander reliever Johnny Malatesta came in for the last out in the eighth and the final three outs in the ninth for the save.  Malatesta recorded two strikeouts in four batters faced.

NJIT starting pitcher Sean Lubreski earned this third win of the season going six innings giving up one unearned run and only two hits.

NJIT takes a break from ASUN Conference play, with a non-conference mid-week game at Fairfield on May 1 and two games next weekend against Saint Joseph's.
