2018 ASUN Women's Tennis Bracket
NEWARK, NJ--NJIT, the number six-seed in the 2018 ASUN Conference Women's Tennis Tournament will open postseason play against third-seeded Lipscomb, hosted by University of North Florida on Friday, April 20 at 5pm, held at UNF Tennis Complex.
This marks the third appearance for the Highlanders in postseason, since joining the ASUN Conference in 2015-16.
In 2015-16, third-seeded Stetson escaped an upset bid, 4-3, from sixth-seeded NJIT in marathon match.
Last season, the Highlanders' recorded its first-ever win at the ASUN Tennis Championship and first-ever postseason victory for an NJIT Athletic team since joining the ASUN Conference.
The action begins with No. 4 Stetson (3-3 ASUN, 11-8 overall) vs. No. 5 Kennesaw State (2-4 ASUN, 3-14 overall) at 2:30pm followed by and No. 3 Lipscomb (4-2 ASUN, 10-11 overall) vs. No. 6 NJIT (1-5 ASUN, 8-11 overall) at 5pm.

Zaki Abdelrahman commented. "Our players have developed a lot this year and became tactically and mentally stronger. We qualified as No. 6 seed and we know we will play No. 3 Lipscomb on Friday after they defeated us a couple of days ago in Nashville. The team is more prepared and I have no doubt that my players are going to fight and are 100% capable of winning."
FGCU (6-0 ASUN, 10-7 overall), the No. 1 seed in the tournament, will play the winners of No. 4 Stetson/No. 5 Kennesaw State on Saturday, April 21 at 2:30pm. Host North Florida (5-1 ASUN, 15-7 overall), the No. 2 seed, will play the winner of No. 3 Lipscomb/No. 6 NJIT at 5pm.
The ASUN Women's Tennis Championship finals will be played on Sunday, April 22 at 1 pm. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Lipscomb won the regular season match against the Highlanders, 6-1, behind a sweep in the doubles contests and winners in five-out-of-six singles matches.
"This will be a good chance to enter the championship as underdogs and let Lipscomb have all the pressure on them," Abdelrahman added.
The Highlanders are led by freshman
Advaita Saravanan and junior
Amanda Helminsky with 11 wins on the season.
Saravanan, who joined the Highlanders in January, notched an 11-7 overall record in her first season at NJIT She picked up one win in ASUN action and went 6-1 at second singles and 5-6 at first singles.
ASUN Player of the Week two times this season, Saravanan recorded a 9-5 overall record and 3-3 in ASUN action in doubles action. She combined for a 7-5 mark at the second spot and 2-0 at third doubles with teammate Helminsky.
Helminsky combined for an impressive 11-4 mark in singles action and went 4-2 in ASUN play (won in straight sets over Upstate, Stetson, KSU and Lipscomb). She recorded a 6-2 record at fifth singles, 4-2 at the sixth spot and 1-0 at the fourth.
She won the first six out of seven matches and went 7-3 in the last 10 matches while combininf for a 7-5 mark at the second spot and 2-0 at third doubles with teammate Saravanan, tallying a 9-5 overall mark and 3-3 in ASUN action.
Freshman
Holly Matson joined the Highlanders in January and notched 10 wins in her first season at NJIT. She recorded a 3-3 mark in ASUN play while going, 6-5 at the third spot, 3-2 at second singles and 1-1 at the fourth spot.
She posted a 7-7 mark, 3-2 in ASUN doubles action with teammate
Rafaella Sampaio (7-6 record at first doubles).
Sophomore
Mayar Eltony, a 2017 ASUN First-Team and All-Rookie team honoree from a season ago, combined for seven wins, including a 3-3 mark in ASUN action. She went 4-2 at second singles and 2-6 at the first spot.
In doubles action, teamed with
Alba Rosas Garcia, the duo posted a 7-3 mark and went 2-2 in ASUN. The pair combined for a 6-2 mark at the third spot and 1-1 at second.
