Alvaro Gimeno Named EIVA Newcomer of the Year; Piotr Namiotko Tabs Second Team Honors

2018 EIVA Team and Individual Awards

NEWARK, NJ--Freshman Alvaro Gimeno has been selected 2018 Newcomer of the Year in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) while sophomore Piotr Namiotko earned second-team honors, Brian Snow of the EIVA announced.

Gimeno, a first-team honoree, from Salou, Spain earned EIVA Player of the Week once this season (March 19) and ranks second in the EIVA in kills (313), points (381.5), service aces (45), third in points per set (4.02) and fifth in kills per set (3.29).

Gimeno, who joined the Highlanders in January 2018, combined for 16 double-digit matches with kills, including a career-high 20 vs. Saint Francis U on March 3.

The 6-foot-7 opposite led the Highlanders in service aces, recording a season-best five aces vs. Belmont Abbey on February 3.

Namiotko, a sophomore from Harrison, NJ, picked up one EIVA Player of the Week honor and ranks third in the conference in kills per set (3.42), fifth in kills (277) and points per set (3.83) and sixth in points (310.5).

The Highlander opposite notched 14 double-digit matches with kills, including three 20+ kill performances.  He recorded a career-best 23 kills against Milwaukee School of Engineering.

NJIT, which did not earn a spot in the four-team EIVA tournament, completed its 2018 slate with a 9-17 overall record, including a 5-9 record in league competition, finishing in sixth place.
