NEWARK, NJ – NJIT men's volleyball registered a 3-1 non-conference win over Springfield on Wednesday night at the Wellness and Events Center.
The Highlanders handed the Pride their second loss of the season winning 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23.
Alvaro Gimeno posted a match-high 14 kills, while
Piotr Namiotko made 13 kills and
Luca Berger posted 10 kills and a team-high four blocks.
Cameron Tait,
Kevin Myren and
Shannon Heckman played in their final home match of their careers. Tait tallied 35 assists, while Myren notched nine kills and three blocks, and Heckman a match-high eight digs.
For Springfield S. Figueroa Velez made a team-high 12 kills and five serving aces and Joseph Irizarry a match-high six blocks in the loss. Mike Neary added a match-high 38 assists.
Five Highlanders posted three or more kills in the first set, with 20 total and Namiotko leading NJIT with five. The Highlanders took and early 1-0 lead that they would never let up, winning the set 25-22.
In the second set Springfield fought for 13 tie scores, with the last time coming at 22-22. The Highlanders scored the last three points of the set, with a kill by
Kevin Myren and two blocks in a row for the final 25-22 score.
The Pride took the third set 25-20. Down 15-11, Springfield scored three points to come within one point 15-14. Tied up 17-17, Kyle Jasuta gave Springfield the 18-17 lead, a lead they would not let up for the rest of the set.
The fourth set was the closest set of the night with the Highlanders coming out on top 25-23. All tied up at 23-23, the Highlanders went up one on an attack error. To end the match,
Bailey Mundy blocked an attack by Kenny Lawrence to register the win for NJIT.
The Highlanders play their final two EIVA matches this weekend, traveling first to Saint Francis U on April 13 for a 7pm match and then to Penn State on April 14 also starting at 7pm.
