WALTHAM, MA – NJIT men and women's fencing competed at the Eric Sollee Invitational on Saturday hosted by Brandeis, with the men going undefeated.
The Highlander men went 6-0 defeating Brown 15-12, Haverford 20-7, MIT 17-10, Stevens 20-7, Boston College 16-11 and Brandeis 14-13.
On the sabre strip,
Greg Puccio finished 14-4 on the day and was the only Highlander to post a win against every team. Teammate
Thomas Slawinski earned a 13-5 record with 3-0 wins against Haverford, MIT and Stevens.
The men's foil squad was let by
Simon Rizell who posted a 13-5 record, and
Chris Saulys posted a 12-5 record going undefeated against Haverford, MIT and Stevens.
Henrique Marques competed only against Brown and Brandies and compiled a 4-2 record.
Every member of the men's epee squad scored a 60% or higher winning percentage. Leading the pack was freshman
Brett Bogert who notched a 13-5 record. Teammate
Eduardo Ezcurra went 16-6 on the day and
Gal Gluhic earned a 9-6 record. Freshman
Thomas Manley posted a 3-2 only competing against MIT and Stevens.
The NJIT women went 0-6 at the invitational, losing to Brown, Haverford and Boston College 14-13, 17-10 to MIT, 20-7 to Stevens and 15-12 to Brandeis.
The women's top performer was
Jule Shigihara on the foil strip, who boasted a 15-3 record at the invite and was the only woman to defeat all teams going 3-0 against Brown, Boston College and Brandeis, and winning 2-1 against Haverford, MIT and Stevens.
Cristina Garcia Mendicino earned herself a 9-3 record in foil.
In women's epee
Julia Garcia and
Maria Sztan were the Highlanders top performers. Senior Garcia went 12-3 while junior Sztan posted a 12-6 record.
The NJIT men have the MACFA B Round Robin hosted by Stevens on February 10 starting at 8am while the women have a break until February 25 where they will compete at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational.
