DURHAM, NC—NC Central swept the weekend series from visiting, NJIT with a 13-5 victory in the final game at Durham Athletic Park.
NC Central (5-2) scored a pair of runs in the second inning, added a run in the third and exploded for seven runs in the fifth for a 10-0 lead. The Eagles added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
NJIT (0-3) put four runs on the board in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded double to left center by
Edgar Badaraco, scoring a pair of runs. Freshman
David Marcano tripled in the inning, driving in Badaraco and scored on an Eagle wild pitch.
In the top of the ninth, NJIT added a run on a bases loaded sacrifice fly to right field by
Michael Anastasia, scoring
Alex Burman, who led off the inning with a walk.
NC Central DH Andrew Valichka hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, including a solo homerun in the sixth. 2B Corey Joyce went 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored, including a double and solo homerun.
3B Caleb Coyle drove in three Eagles, going 1-for-3 with one run scored. C Ryan Decker drove in a pair of runs, finishing 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
For NJIT, Badaraco hit 2-for-3, driving in two runs while 3B
David Marcano finished 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. LF
Jesse Uttendorfer went 2-for-5 while five different Highlanders posted one hit.
NC Central starting pitcher Devin Sweet (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, pitching 6.0 innings, striking out 10 Highlander batters allowing five hits and three runs. The Eagles used five players through the final three innings.
Sophomore
Jared Kacso (0-1) was credited with the loss, pitching 4.0 inning, letting up four hits and four runs.
Chris Gibbons, the Highlanders fifth pitcher, pitched the bottom of the seventh, allowing one run while
Brett Lubreski pitched the eighth, striking out the side.
NJIT will return to action March 3-4 when the Highlanders visit Navy for a four-game series. Both games on Saturday and Sunday will begin at 11am.
