NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT men's volleyball team will open Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) action this weekend, visiting George Mason on February 16 at 7pm.
NJIT (2-7, 0-0 EIVA) started its 2018 campaign with a challenging schedule, playing five teams ranked in the top 12.
The Highlanders have won its last two matches at home inside the new Wellness and Events Center, both, 3-0 decisions against Lindenwood and Belmont Abbey.
NJIT was selected sixth in the 2018 EIVA Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning 26 points.
Newcomer
Alvaro Gimeno, who joined the Highlanders in January, hails from Salou, Spain and tops the team in total kills (90), kills per set (3.10) and service aces (17). He has combined for three double-digit kill matches, including a career-best 16 at UC Santa Barbara.
The 6-foot-7 opposite ranks first in service aces in the EIVA, third in kills per set, fourth in points per set, sixth in total kills and ninth in hitting percentage.
Setter
Ricardo Whitaker leads the Highlanders with 216 assists, which ranks fourth in the EIVA and his 8.00aps ranks fifth.
Senior libero
Shannon Heckman's team-best 54 digs is eighth currently in the EIVA.
Transfer
Luca Berger, who stands at 6-foot-10, ranks tied for 13
th in the EIVA with 20 total blocks. Berger notched seven total blocks against No. 1 Long Beach State on January 5.
