Southeast Missouri Uses Late Run in Fourth Quarter to Top NJIT

NEWARK, NJ—
Southeast Missouri used a 9-0 run in the final 1:23 of the game to slip past NJIT, 68-58, in the final game of the NJIT Thanksgiving Classic Sunday afternoon at the Wellness and Events Center.

In a closely-contested match, which featured 15 lead changes and seven ties, the Highlanders took its last lead of the game, 52-50, with 5:12 on the clock in the fourth quarter after a layup by Tatianna Torres.

The Redhawks (2-4) went on a 15-4 run over the last 4:45 to secure the win, paced by Tesia Thompson's team-high 15 points and eight rebounds.  Guard Adrianna Murphy scored 14 points while Jocelyn Taylor and Carrie Shephard notched 11 points apiece.

NJIT (1-6) was paced by sophomore guard Ellyn Stoll's game-best 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, 4-for-5 from three-point range and 4-of-6 from the charity strip.  Stoll pulled down six rebounds and shared game-high honors, dishing out four assists.

Graduate student Kelly Guarino combined for 16 points on 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, including four rebounds.  Junior forward Danielle Tunstall added eight points and led the game with nine rebounds as the Highlanders outrebounded the Redhawks, 43-to-39.

NJIT scored the first point of the game and extended its lead to as many as nine, 18-9, at the 1:33 mark, after a pair of free throws made by Tunstall.  Southeast Missouri scored eight quick points in the final :44 second of the quarter, slimming the lead to within three, 18-15.

Both teams scored 13 points in the second quarter as the Highlander held a 31-28 lead heading into halftime.  Guarino and Stoll scored nine points each in the first half for the Highlanders.

After five ties in the third quarter, Southeast Missouri connected on a shot at the buzzer by Murphy to give the Redhawks a one-point lead, 46-45, to end of quarter.

NJIT will return to action on Wednesday at 7pm when the Highlanders visit Rider.  The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
