LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Rider's Stella Johnson and Lea Favre combined for 42 points as Rider defeated, visiting NJIT, 67-46, in women's basketball non-conference action at Alumni Gymnasium.
Rider (3-4) was led by a game-best 22 points from Johnson, who finished 9-for-18 from the field and 4-of-10 from three-point range followed by Favre, who combined for 20 points, shooting 10-for-16 from the field. Johnson dished out a game-best eight assists and added five steals in the win.
NJIT (1-7) was paced by graduate student
Kelly Guarino's 12 points followed by junior forward
Danielle Tunstall with nine points.
Tatianna Torres and
Ellyn Stoll each added six points.
The visitors held a huge advantage on the boards, 48-28, paced by Tunstall and Torres with 10 each. The 10 rebounds for Torres matches a season-best 10 rebounds at Howard on November 9.
The Highlanders took control of the game early, 6-2, behind a three-pointer by
Ellyn Stoll, which opened the scoring for the visitors and an old-fashion three-point play by
Danielle Tunstall. Over the next minute of play, Rider knotted the score at 6-6, heading into the first media timeout. Rider's Lexi Stover sparked a 9-1 spurt, knocking down a three-pointer from the left wing and the Broncs pushed ahead, 18-9, to close out the first quarter.
Trailing 18-9, the Highlanders used a 7-2 run in the second quarter, cutting the Bronc deficit to seven, 25-18, after a three-pointer by
Kelly Guarino at the 7:02 mark. After four scoreless minutes, NJIT used a 5-0 run in the final 3:10, after Guarino connected on a deep three-pointer from the top of the arc and
Tatianna Torres finished a fast break layup to slim the Bronc lead down to seven, 30-23.
At the half, Tunstall paced the Highlanders with seven points and five rebounds while Rider's Stella Johnson and Amari Johnson added seven points.
NJIT's Guarino opened the scoring in the third quarter with a layup at the 8:42 mark to cut the lead to within, five, 30-25. The home team used an 11-2 run to take a 14-point advantage, 41-27, just under the four minute mark. Guarino, who is ranked tied for 17
th in the nation in free throw percentage, knocked down a pair of free throws at the 3:52 mark to spark a 6-0 run, pulling within eight, 41-33, after consecutive layups by the Highlanders.
The Broncs outscored the visiting Highlanders, 22-12, in the fourth quarter, cruising to a 67-46 victory.
NJIT will return to action on Sunday, December 2 at 1pm when the Highlanders host Vermont of Alumnae Day.
