Manhattan Prevails in Epic Battle with a 16-14 Set Five Win

The Jaspers Posted 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14 Scores for Fourth Win in Last Five Tries

NEWARK, NJ -- A surging Jaspers women's volleyball team defeated NJIT in extra points in the fifth and deciding set, 16-14, as Manhattan College won by scores of 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25 and 16-14 on Wednesday at the Wellness & Events Center (WEC).

Manhattan College broke a 14-14 tie in the fifth set by scoring the final two points, culminating in a match-winning kill by sophomore Emily Hoener. Hoener finished with a set-high four kills to finish with a match-high-tying 16 kills.

The Jaspers (4-19, 2-8 MAAC) have now won four of its last five matches -- a span that started with a season-high, three-match winning streak from Oct. 7-13.

The Highlanders (4-19, 2-6 ASUN), led with 16 kills by senior Emily Krachenfels, are now 2-2 over their last four matches since Oct. 6.

Fueled by a pair of kills by junior Madi Busler, NJIT raced out to a 7-4 lead in the fifth set. But after Manhattan College evened the score with three straight points, the rest of the fifth set was played within a point until the ultimate decider.

Busler finished with 15 kills and freshman Lillee Olson notched 14. Junior Liz Benson posted a team-high 32 assists while senior Adriana Nieto led the Highlanders with 16 digs.

The Jaspers had a match-high 47 assists from freshman Shruti Mangipudi and a match-high 22 digs from senior Alyssa Rehrer.

The Highlanders took control early in the first set to build a healthy lead en route to a 25-18 win. With a 5-4 advantage, NJIT pulled away with an 11-1 run that started with a kill by Olson. During the span, the Highlanders reeled off seven-straight tallies that started and ended on kills by Krachenfels -- both on assists from Nieto.

The Jaspers turned the match around by winning the next two sets. The momentum shift started with some late heroics in the second set -- as Manhattan scored the final five points for a come-from-behind 25-23 win. Three of the points were registered on kills by senior Sandra Lozanova while three were assisted by Mangipudi. The roll continued when the Jaspers took the third set, 25-22.

The Highlanders forced a fifth set by pulling away from a 16-16 tie for a 25-21 set four victory. Olson broke the deadlock with one of her four kills in the set -- which ended on a strike from freshman Makayla Greenfield.

NJIT returns to conference play with a four-game stretch against ASUN opponents, beginning with a trip to Nashville to take on third-place Lipscomb (11-8, 6-1) on Friday. The contest is scheduled for 6:30 PM (CT) at Allen Arena.
