Batista’s Late Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Fairfield, 3-2

FAIRFIELD, CTNoelle Batista's goal in the 80th minute proved the winner for NJIT, who defeated Fairfield, 3-2, on Friday night at Lessing Field.

NJIT extends its win streak to three, marking the longest win streak since 2009.

Batista's goal came off a free kick from Emily Heckman. Defender Heckman served the ball into the box that was almost cleared until Batista flew from the top of the 18, heading the ball towards the goal, hitting off a defender and into the back of the net..

The Highlanders (3-3) scored its first two goals in the first half, from Melanie Zrno and Jennifer Callaghan.

Sophomore Zrno received the ball from freshman Christine Conaghy and floated the ball over Stags keeper Megan DeFeo in the first 70 seconds of the game.

For her first collegiate goal, freshman Callaghan finished a ball from Arianna Gerber from inside the 18 in the 26th minute.

After NJIT had 2-0 advantage going into the second half, Fairfield (2-4) tied the game with goals from Liz Dumas and Shannon Ryan.

The Stags outshot the Highlanders 13-10 overall, with NJIT grabbing the edge in shots on goal, 7-5.

The Highlanders notched their five second half shots in the last 15 minutes of the match, keeping up the pressure before Batista finally scored her first goal of the season.

Amelia Sapirman collected three saves in her third win of the season, while DeFeo made four saves for Fairfield.

NJIT has a quick turnaround, hosting Rider on Sunday at 1pm on the campus of Kean University's East Campus Facility.
