NEWARK, NJ—The NJIT women's volleyball team bounced back into the win column with a straight set win over visiting Iona, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Fleisher Athletic Center.
NJIT, 5-1 in the last six matches, improves to 7-8 on the season while Iona drops to 5-10.
The Highlanders took the first set 25-17 and won the second and third set by identical scores, 25-19, to earn the 3-0 sweep.
Sophomore
Madi Busler shared match-high honors with 11 kills, hitting .400 for the match on 20 swings and just three errors.
Tess Albyn and
Adrianne Bynoe each notched seven kills in the win.
Setter
Liz Benson paced the match with 30 assists while junior libero Adrian Nieto combined for eight digs, a match-best. Sophomore
Alahna Diaz added six digs for NJIT.
In front of the net, senior
Mikalah Hughes posted five block assists.
The Highlanders held a 11-3 advantage in service aces, led by Busler with four and
Olivia Welsch with three.
Iona was paced by Jamie Smith's 11 kills followed by Claire Archibald with eight. Setter Emma Rose piled up 18 assists while Archibald and Smith both notched six digs, a team-best.
The Highlanders hit an impressive .545 in the first set, led by Busler's five kills. NJIT combined for 13 kills on 22 attempts with just one error in the 25-17 victory.
The second frame, which was played close until the Highlanders, ahead 15-12, extended its lead to 21-14, cruising to a 25-19 win.
In the third set, which saw nine ties and five lead changes, saw its final tie at 17 all. The Highlanders used an 8-2 spurt to close out the set, 25-19.
NJIT will return to action on September 27 when the Highlanders visit Saint Peter's at 7pm.
