JERSEY CITY, NJ—Visiting NJIT won its second straight 3-0 decision at Saint Peter's Wednesday evening in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Yanitelli Center.
NJIT, winners of its last six-out-of-seven matches, improves to an even 8-8 on the season while Saint Peter's, still in search of its first win in 2017, drops to 0-16.
The Highlanders won in straight sets—25-18, 25-23 and 25-14.
Senior
Tess Albyn led the way with a match-best 11 kills followed by senior middle
Mikalah Hughes with eight kills on 13 attempts for a .538 hitting percentage. Middle
Adrianne Bynoe finished the match with a .556 hitting percentage notching six kills, one error on nine swings.
Liz Benson, the Highlanders sophomore setter, combined for a match-high 28 assists while junior co-captain
Adriana Nieto posted a match-best 10 digs for the Highlanders.
Hughes and
Madi Busler paced NJIT with three service aces apiece as the Highlander held a 9-6 advantage in the service ace category.
Saint Peter's was led by Alexus Sharp's seven kills. Setter Carolina Ruiz piled up a team-best 14 assists and added four digs. Peacock Yaidelis notched seven digs.
The Highlanders hit an impressive .333 in the first set, notching 13 kills on 27 attempts. The set remained tight till the mid-teens with the score tied 15-15, when the visitors used on a 3-1 spurt to push ahead, 18-16. After a point by the home team, NJIT used a 7-1 run to close out the first set, 25-18.
In the second frame, the closest set of the three, saw Saint Peter's ahead, 21-16. After a timeout by the Highlanders, NJIT scored four straight closing the Peacock gap, 20-21. Saint Peter's scored a point out of the timeout but the Highlanders used a 5-1 spurt to pull out the come-from-behind win, 25-23.
NJIT hit .393 in the third set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead and never looked back. The Highlanders went on to win 25-14.
NJIT will return to ASUN Conference action on Friday, hosting North Florida at 7pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
