USC Upstate Takes NJIT In Five Sets in ASUN Conference Action


NEWARK, NJ—Senior Tess Albyn led NJIT with 22 kills but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders absorbed a 3-2 defeat against visiting USC Upstate in ASUN Conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon in the Fleisher Athletic Center.

USC Upstate (4-10 overall, 1-0 in ASUN) took the second and third frames, 25-20 and 25-20 before securing the win in the fifth set with a 16-14 win. 

NJIT (6-8 overall, 0-1 in the ASUN) entered Saturday's match on a four-match win streak.  The Highlanders won the first set, 25-21 and fourth, 25-14, to force a deciding set.

In the fifth and deciding set, NJIT led the visiting Spartans, 10-7, resulting in a USC Upstate timeout.  After a point by the Highlanders, Upstate scored the next three points, pulling within one, 10-11. 

USC Upstate used a 4-2 spurt to push ahead, 14-13, as the Highlanders took its second timeout of the set.  After a kill by Albyn, which knotted the set at 14, USC Upstate scored the final two points to secure the 16-14 victory.  Albyn led the Highlanders with seven kills in the set.

In addition to Albyn's 22 kills, Iva Mandic was the only other Highlander to reach double-digit kills with 10. 

Albyn finished the match with a .400 hitting percentage on 40 attempts while Mandic finished with a.438 hitting percentage on 16 swings and just three errors.  NJIT's Madi Busler and Mikalah Hughes each notched nine kills.

Sophomore setter Liz Benson combined for a double-double with a match-high 60 assist and 10 digs, including two block assists.

Junior libero Adriana Nieto recorded a match-high 24 digs, including a match-best five service aces, as the Highlanders led the service ace category, 10-7.  Olivia Welsch added 11 digs followed by Benson with 10.
In front of the net for NJIT, Hughes combined for seven total digs (three solo, four assists).

Lily Dempsey led the Spartans with 12 kills followed by Callie Yeargin, who just missed notching a double-double, adding nine digs.  Setter Rebecca Shearer posted 34 assists, six digs and six total blocks (one solo, five assists).

Defensively, libero Kaleigh Kelley paced the Spartans with 16 digs followed by Montana Swanson with 10 digs.

NJIT will have a quick turnaround and host Iona on Sunday at 1pm in the Fleisher Athletic Center.
