EASTON, PA—The NJIT women's volleyball team swept Lafayette, 3-0, for the Highlanders second straight win of the season Friday evening at Kirby Sports Center in non-conference volleyball action.
Visiting NJIT won in straight sets – 25-23, 25-14 and 25-20.
NJIT (4-7) was led by senior
Tess Albyn and sophomore transfer
Madi Busler with 10 kills apiece. Albyn finished with a team-best .292 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter
Liz Benson notched a match-best 26 assists while junior libero
Adriana Nieto recorded a match-high 16 digs.
In addition to Nieto's 16 digs,
Olivia Welsch recorded (8) digs and
Alahna Diaz (7).
Senior middle blocker
Mikalah Hughes combined for three total blocks (all assists) and senior
Alyssa Armada paced the match with three service aces, as the Highlanders held a 5-2 edge in that category.
Lafayette (1-10) was paced by Katrina Ruggiero with eight kills. Setter Julia Howard combined for 15 assists and eight digs while libero Lexie Caraveo recorded 14 digs.
The first frame, which saw 12 ties and four lead changes, saw it final tie at 23-23, after an NJIT attacking error. Following a timeout by the Highlanders, NJIT scored the final two points of the set to pick up a 25-23 victory.
In the second set, the Highlanders jumped out to a 12-8 lead and later extended to 21-13 as the Highlanders cruised to a 25-14 win.
NJIT hit .222 in the third frame, combining for 15 kills on 36 swings. Neither team led by more than three points until late in the set when the Highlanders scored three straight points, pushing ahead, 22-18, after a kill by
Adrianne Bynoe.
After a point for Lafayette, NJIT closed out the set on a 3-1 run to earn the 25-20 victory.
NJIT will return to action on Saturday at 11am when the Highlanders face Fairleigh Dickinson.
