NEWARK, NJ—Visiting Kennesaw State scored a run in every inning but one, to clinch the ASUN Conference series at NJIT, 15-5, Sunday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.
The Owls clinch a berth to the 2017 ASUN Baseball Championships hosted by Stetson on May 24-28, improving to 10-8 in the conference and 22-27 overall while the Highlanders, who complete its home portion of its schedule, move to 1-17 in the league and 8-38 overall.
Kennesaw State scored two runs in the first, second, third, fifth, sixth, and three more in the seventh, one in the eighth and one more in the ninth to take its largest lead of the ballgame at 15-5.
NJIT plated a single run in the second and four in the bottom of the sixth.
RHP Gabe Friese tossed a solid 5.0 innings for Kennesaw State, moving to 3-2 on the season, allowing three runs and five hits. Chris Erwin, the Owls third pitcher on the day, threw three shutout innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five Highlanders to close out the series.
Erwin, who started the game as the designated hitter before closing out the game on the mound, finished 4-for-5 with three runs while 3B Austin Upshaw went 2-for-6 with two RBI, C Griffin Helms (3-for-4, three RBI), Garrett Hodges (2-for-4, three RBI), and Jake Franklin (3-for-5, RBI), as the five produced 14 of the 16 hits and drove in nine runs.

Brent Jones (1-3) was credited with the loss, pitching 2.0 innings following by
Chris Gibbons (3.1 innings),
Brett Lubreski (2.2 innings) and
Aquib Ramkishun (1.0 inning, two hits, one run).
Brady Hall led the Highlanders, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, including his second double of the season. C

Kennesaw State plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single up the middle by 1B Taylor Allum and RBI triple to left center by C Griffin Helms to give the visiting Owls a 2-0 lead.
The Owls added two runs in the top of the third on one hit and two Highlander errors, pushing its lead to 4-0.

Kennesaw State added to its lead, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh with two outs, sparked by three doubles, for a 13-5 score.
The Owls plated a single run in the top of the eighth and ninth, pushing the Owl lead to 15-5.
NJIT will conclude the 2017 season at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, SC on May 18-20. The game on Thursday will begin at 6pm.
