Jacksonville Sweeps ASUN Series at NJIT; Dolphins Win 4-3 in 10 Innings


NEWARK, NJ—Dakota Julyia drove in the game-winning run for Jacksonville in the top of the tenth inning, and the Dolphins went on to win, 4-3, sweeping the ASUN Conference weekend series from NJIT Sunday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.

Jacksonville won its sixth straight, improving to 5-1 in the ASUN, 18-16 overall while the Highlanders fall to 0-5 in the league, 3-25 overall.

The Dolphins went ahead 4-3 in the top of the tenth on a two out RBI single with bases loaded to left field by Julyia, driving in CF Ruben Somellian, who led off the inning with a walk.

The Highlanders went down 1-2-3 in the tenth.

Jacksonville's RHP Tyler Santana (4-1) picked up the win, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out two Highlanders.

1B Angel Camacho went a perfect 4-for-4 in the game with one RBI while RF Nathan Koslowski, 3B Alex Seifert and Juyia finished with two hit and one run batted in apiece.

NJIT's RHP John Saviano (0-5) was credited with the loss, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing three hits, two runs and three walks.  Highlander starter Tyler Stafflinger had a no-decision, pitching five scoreless innings, giving up three hits while striking out four Dolphin batters.

Sophomore SS Justin Etts finished 3-for-5 (all singles) with one run scored while five different Highlanders – RF Michael Anastasia (1-for-4), LF Jesse Uttendorfer (1-for4), 3B Bryan Haberstroh (1-for-4), C Cody Kramer (1-for-4) and 2B Tom Brady (1-for-3) posted a hit Sunday.

After six scoreless innings, the Highlanders pushed across the first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth with two outs on a single up the middle by Brady, scoring Etts, who led off the inning with a single to left center and advanced to second on a groundout, as the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead.

Jacksonville answered in the top of the seventh, knotting the game at 1-1 after a walk and three consecutive singles.  Dolphins Koslowski drove in the first run with a single through the left side, scoring C Reagan Wright and the Dolphins went ahead, 2-1, on a bases loaded groundout to first, scoring 3B Alex Seifert.  Seifert reached first with a bunt single down the first base line.

NJIT regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the eighth with two outs on back-to-back home runs by Uttendorfer and Haberstroh.  Uttendorfer knocked out his second homer of the season to right field and Haberstroh notched his third of the season to left field.

Jacksonville tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth on a double to left center by Camacho, scoring Koslowski, who led off the inning with a single to right field.

NJIT will return to action on April 13-15 at North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida.  The three-game series will begin on April 13 at 6pm.
