Highlanders Drop 10-5 Decision to Monmouth Saturday Afternoon

– NJIT men's lacrosse dropped a 10-5 decision to Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium at Drew University.

The Highlanders (0-11) were led by Ryan Kaden and Mathew Sanchez who each had a goal and an assist. Sanchez's assist was the first of his career, and his two points in the game was a new career-high.

Ryan Callaghan and Aaron Forster each added a goal and Tyler Stevenson posted his first career goal for NJIT, while Matthew Valdez tallied one assist.

NJIT goalie Nick Marzullo tied his career-high 17 saves, while also grabbing two ground balls and a team-high two caused turnovers.

For the Hawks (8-3) Dan Bloodgood, Eamon Campbell and Zach Clemente each scored a two goals apiece, and Monmouth received goals from four others including Chris Daly, Tyler Keen, Bryce Wasserman and Anthony Sardo.

Nick Hreshko stopped seven Highlander shots in his eighth win of the season.

The Hawks opened up scoring in the first with an unassisted goal by Bloodgood in the 13th minute, with the Highlanders tying it under four minutes later with a goal by Callaghan from Sanchez.

Monmouth scored three unanswered goal to take a 4-1 lead heading into the second.

In the second each team scored two goals apiece, with the score 6-3 going into halftime.

The third was very low scoring, with Campbell getting the lone goal of the quarter for the Hawks with just seven seconds remaining giving Monmouth a 7-3 lead into the final stanza.

In a five goal fourth quarter, the Hawks outscored the Highlanders 3-2.

Bloodgood scored at 10:36 extending the Monmouth lead to five.

At the next faceoff, Stevenson came up with the ball and charged straight to the goal to score the first goal of his career.

With under five minute remaining three more goals would be scored by each team for the final 10-5 score.

The Highlanders have four more games remaining, three of them on the road, starting at Lafayette on Tuesday April 11 for a 7pm game.
