MADISON, NJ – Junior
Nick Marzullo broke the NJIT record for saves in a game with 21, in the Highlanders 12-5 loss on senior day to UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon.
Marzullo broke his own record that he earned against UMass Lowell last season, with 17 stops. With his 21 saves, Marzullo also grabbed a game-high seven ground balls. Marzullo ends 2017 with a career-best .542 save percentage.
The Highlanders (1-14) received goals by five different players with
Ryan Darrow,
Aaron Forster,
Matt Brown,
Jacob Sieber and
Johnny Madaras IV. Freshman
Ryan Kaden posted the only two assists for the Highlanders.
Grant Lardieri made eight saves in his fourth win of the season.
For the River Hawks (4-12), Keenan Koswin and Matthew Balter notched two goals each, with Koswin assisting in two more goals for four points. Sean Tyrrell tallied three points on a goal and two assists.
UMass Lowell had a 7-1 lead going into halftime, and the Highlanders score four of their five goals in the second half.
Ryan Callaghan and
Jordan Rosal were the two seniors honored on senior day. Rosal appeared in nine games in his three year career with two ground balls and Callaghan ends his career appearing in 29 games with 29 goals and 13 assists for 42 points and 24 ground balls.
After three years of being a varsity program, the Highlanders have grown each season. In 2017, NJIT men's lacrosse posted 16 more goals, seven more assists and 23 more points than last season.
The Highlanders broke four program records this season, including goals in a game (17) assists in a game (14), points in a game (31) and face-off wins (19), including 12 individual records.
Sophomore Forster broke eight of the 12 records himself. Forster broke the records in career goals (49), goals in a season (34), goals in a game (5), career assists (22), assists in a game (5), career points (71), points in a season (43) and points in a game (9, 4g, 5a).
John Tachon made an impact as a freshman, starting in all 15 games and breaking the NJIT single season records for ground balls with 71 and caused turnovers with 18.
Tyler Stevenson broke the NJIT record for face-off wins in a game-winning 17-of-20 at Hampton.
Captain Marzullo is the last individual record breaker for the season with his 21 saves in a game.
