Fact Sheet
The #HighlanderStrong 24 Hour Relay, sponsored by the NJIT Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and NJIT Men's & Women's Cross Country/Track and Field teams will begin on Thursday, April 27 at 5pm on the Upper and Lower Green in the Center of Campus.
Experiences gained as an NJIT student, plays a vital role in shaping the type of person we will be after our days on campus. It is our hope that each and every one of us can apply these lessons after graduation, and live a life of prosperity and abundance.
Luckily, most of us will be met with this fate.
Unfortunately for NJIT basketball Alumnae
Jelena Zoric, this was not the case. Jelena graduated in 2013 and decided to return home to Serbia. Three years later, she began losing various sensory functions—the ability to hear, see, and distinguish hot from cold.
After a doctor's visit, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor the size of a fist. Since this diagnoses, she has undergone a total of three brain surgeries and 33 rounds of chemotherapy.
She has been afforded the best care in Vienna, however unfortunately she has not completely removed the tumor. Her insurance is not covered outside of Serbia, and her family has to pay out of pocket for these expensive treatments, in addition to the cost of accommodations, medication and flights.
Jelena should be spending these years post-college building her life and career, but instead, she is fighting to survive. Her family has taken out numerous loans, sold their business, and is now selling their house to give Jelena a chance to live the life that we all aspire to.
Let's come together to show Jelena that she never has to be alone, and that her time here is not forgotten. Let's show her the truth behind "
Once a Highlander, Always a Highlander." #HIGHLANDERSTRONG
